I belong to an internet discussion group dedicated to discussing the work of my musical hero, Randy Newman. A few years ago, we decided it might be fun to record our own versions of our favorite Randy Newman songs and put them together on a CD. I volunteered to coordinate the project because I'm out of my fucking mind. It was challenging, but ultimately very gratifying, and I am very proud of the results.

The participants were all fans, almost all amateurs, so the quality of the recordings and performances is quite divergent. But it's noteworthy for Randy Newman fans because Randy contributed an unreleased track to the project — his demo of "That'll Do," his Oscar-nominated song from "Babe, Pig In The City." (Pretty cool, huh?!)

I got to record two songs with my other favorite musician, Roy Zimmerman, who recorded me in his little demo studio. It was such a thrill for me to collaborate with one of my musical heroes on the songs of the other.

We pressed up 300 copies, and I still have about 50 in a box in my bedroom. I've been selling them for $14 (U.S.) to ship to the U.S. or Canada, and $17 (U.S). to ship anywhere else. (It's just to make my costs back. This was for love, not profit.) So, if for some inexplicable reason you're interested in having a copy of this for your very own, me.

MAYBE WE'RE SINGING IT WRONG

This is a follow-up to the Randy Newman fan tribute CD described above. Our internet discussion group had grown so much in 3 years that we decided it would be fun to do a new CD with more of our own versions of Randy's songs.

Although this was another fan project, it came out even bigger and better than the first one — a double CD with 38 tracks. I didn't coordinate this effort. I'm not that crazy. This time, the honors were done by the lovely and brilliant Susan McTigue. For the track list, click here, and for ordering information, click here.

CRIME DOESN'T PAY

Released in September 2005

This is the latest CD by our Randy Newman internet discussion group. But this time, instead of covering Randy's songs, we thought it might be fun to do a CD of our own, original songs.

This effort was spearheaded by the amazing Ralph H. It's a double CD set, jam-packed with wonderful music and poetry.

This is actually my favorite of our three CDs — the result of a group of people brought together by our love of Randy's music, and inspired by his originality to try our hand at expressing our own creativity. (My song is pretty lame, but hey, I don't write songs and I wanted to be on the CD.)
