How do I stop my 2 JRT's from howling when I arrive at home?

My two Jack Russells start howling the moment they hear my footsteps coming up the path. (It's so deafening, it actually sounds more like 16 dogs). When I come in they continue for about 5 minutes. I have tried ignoring them when they do it, but they just keep going. I've also tried giving them affection, but they yip and yap through it all. For a while I tried picking one of them up, and it worked for about two weeks, but now they continue howling even in my arms. We walk them twice a day and exercise them by playing soccer with them for about 20 minutes every day. They are 12 and 9 years old. I know they are just happy to see me, but it's embarrasing (I'm sure everyone in a one-block radius knows when I have gotten home from work). Anybody have any ideas?

Go back to ignoring them. This will take time so dont give up. Often times people tryi this route and dont get instant results so they try something else, which just makes you have to start all over again. Ignore them, Ignoire them, Ignore them. Be consistant and do it for as long as it takes. They will start making a fuss for shorter and shorter periods until they just dont anymore. Also ignore them for a good 15 minuted after they are done. No eye contact, talking, or touching(unless your moving them out of the way with youre legs. Good Luck.
