first use of flutter tonguing?
Is Strauss' "Don Quixote" the earliest example of flutter tonguing on any wind instrument (reh. 22 in the score -- clarinets, horns, trumpets, trombones)? This piece is from 1897.
I'm also curious about the flute, specifically. Does anyone know what the earliest use of flutter tonguing on the flute is? I haven't been able to find anything earlier than "Pierrot Lunaire" (1912), but I haven't looked really hard.

I can't think of anything earlier than Don Quixote. As for the flute part of the question, I read somewhere that Gluck suggested a sort of flutter tongueing in one of his operas to represents spirits or demons but I haven't been able to confirm that. Neither have I been able to find anything earlier than 'Pierrot Lunaire' for flute flutter-tongueing.
